Hi friends,
If you’re reading this, you’ve just stumbled into my little corner of the tabletop world — welcome! I’m Kendall, the designer behind Otherwise, Games, where I create solo‑friendly tabletop games with minimal components.
My goal with this Substack is simple:
One update a month — no spam, no inbox flooding.
Honest progress reports on whatever game(s) I’m designing.
Sneak peeks at art, mechanics, and weird ideas I’m experimenting with.
Right now my focus is Delve in Your Pocket
It’s a print‑and‑play solo dungeon crawl you can fold up and carry anywhere. It comes in two versions:
Shadow Over Hollowdeep — a narrative edition currently entered in the BGG 2025 Solo Print‑and‑Play Design Contest.
Unbound Hollowdeep — a more open‑ended edition that lets you shape the story and customize your character and animal companion.
As a thank‑you for subscribing, you’ll get access to Unbound Hollowdeep — available only to free or paid subscribers. If you’re reading this in your inbox, the download link should already be below. If you’re seeing this on the web, make sure to subscribe to get access.
I have used AI-assisted art for prototyping but would love to commission some human-created art for a final version of Delve in Your Pocket. I have big plans to launch this and future games with crowdfunding projects, so sign up for monthly updates to stay in the loop :)
Everything I post here is free for everyone to read. If you’d like to support my work, you can become a paid subscriber — it’s completely optional. You will get your name in the credits of games published, and early access to some content. No pressure.
If you’re into clever mechanics, thematic twists, and games you can play on your own schedule, I think you’ll enjoy what’s coming.
Thanks for joining me on this adventure,
— Kendall
